We were lucky enough this week to have Lisa's mom Bev join us for what has become a Tennessee tradition, the fireflies in the Smokies. The dogs were excited to have a visitor. Lisa and Bev spent the first day in downtown Knoxville and somehow managed to survive the heat wave we've been having.
On the second day, all three of us spent time in the Smokies. As usual, we found our favorite photo spot. The mountains were about 10 degrees cooler than the city, so the day, while still warm, was quite comfortable.
There was a lot of activity on the river.
We spent the first part of the day in Cade's Cove. Everything is so green. Everyone must have been on the river too because there weren't many others in Cade's Cove. We didn't see any bears but we still saw some wildlife.
After we left Cade's Cove we drove through more of the Smokies.
When we stopped at the Sinks, we saw some people diving from the rocks into a pool in the river. That looked like it would be fun but then we saw this crazy kid climbing a tree next to the river. The tree climbing skills were impressive, even if his decision making skills weren't. He jumped from the tree and didn't seem to get hurt, but he sure came up quick from the river and probably won't make that jump again.
Then we made it to the Sugarlands visitor center. You have to show up early so you can guarantee yourself a parking place and a spot on the trolleys. We were prepared for the wait though. We each had our toys and Bev enjoyed her new iPhone addiction, Angry Birds.
Once the trolleys show up and take you deeper into the mountains, you still have a couple hours of waiting for it to get dark. You can't complain too much though when you get to have a view like this while you're waiting.
There are no pictures of the fireflies, it's too dark for them to work. This year's show wasn't as impressive as last year's, but it was still great to see. It was also great to be able to spend time in the mountains and time with Bev!
