Moonbow

Lisa and I went to Cumberland Falls in Kentucky to see the Moonbow. Even with all the leaves gone, it is a very pretty area.

The Moonbow is very rare. As the sign says, it is the only one in the Western Hemisphere. It actually only occurs one other place on Earth. The Moonbow happens when the light from a full moon shines on the mist of the waterfall and creates a rainbow that can be seen at night.

We walked around for a little while to see some other views of the falls and surrounding areas, but we still had some time until the moon came out....

.... so we went to nearby Corbin, KY to see the original cafe of Colonel Harland Sanders. This is where he found a way to reduce the time it took to cook a chicken from 30 minutes to 9 minutes. He called this new method of cooking chicken "Kentucky frying" and his restaurant became famous for the food he was able to cook quickly (fast food). A modern KFC is on the site too and the Colonel would have been proud as I ordered a Double Down sandwich. It is as gross as it looks, but it had to be tried.

After dinner we went back to the Cumberland Falls. We had to wait until about 8:30 for the moon to be bright enough to create the Moonbow. It was a nice night to wait though, about 60 degrees at sunset.

The Moonbow looks white to the naked eye, but the photo shows the colors being broken down. No lights are shined on the falls, just the moon. It was a lot darker than the picture shows. I had to leave the shutter open for a minute to get the image to show. It was a unique experience.
